Central Arkansas mourns tragic loss of family in Franklin County car accident

Many in the Central Arkansas community are mourning the loss of three members that lost their lives in a car accident early Saturday morning in Franklin County.

His former coach, Reggie Swinton said the news was heartbreaking.

“Devastated, tears and just upset,” said Swinton. “Just angry because this was a great family.”

Coach Swinton has known Corey “CJ” Clemons and his family since CJ was nine years old, coaching him for years.

“CJ had a bright future,” said Swinton. “He was awesome at basketball and football. All of the trips that he rode with me on and flew with me on. We took a lot of trips together and played a lot of games. He was with me a lot.”

A few days after the family went missing, Swinton received a devastating phone call.

Clemson, his sister Nel’Taiyah Green and their mother Tyeasha Green were gone.

According to a crash report, on February 1st at 2 a.m. they were traveling on I-40 when their car hit a bridge, went airborne and landed in a creek bed.

Nel’ Taiyan was a second grader at Southwest Christian Academy and Tyeasha was described as a mother who would do anything for her kids.

“She was such a disciplinary mother but a loving mother and the little girl was sweet and quiet,” said Swinton. “If you could ever see that smile, you would fall in love with that kid. It was just beautiful.”

That personality impacting his team at Morrilton High School where CJ wore number three on the basketball court.

“They are devastated this year,” said Coach Keith Zackery, Morrilton Head Coach. “You would just have to know Corey. His personality was so pleasing and so respectful so it is a big hurt.”

Zackery said despite the loss, the team decided to play their game Tuesday night for CJ. With a missed buzzer beater shot, they took home a win against Pulaski Academy with a score of 57-55.

“That is the same type of basketball game that it was last night,” said Zackery. “It just exemplified who he was to come out on top.”

Swinton said he believes CJ was watching over his teammates.

“I would like to think that was Cj just coming back and letting everybody know that I am okay.”

Zackery said the community has come out to show love for them in their time of need, even last night coming to an away game.
